PLEASE DONATE AT THIS YEAR’S INTERMODAL EUROPE SHOW, 12-14 NOVEMBER 2024
Seaco and Intermodal Events are delighted to collaborate and be proud supporters of Eyes For The World®, a recognized non-profit organization with a core belief that everyone, all over the world, has the right to good sight.
Based in Belgium, Koen Van Pottelbergh, has been an optometrist since 1988, and he is the Founder of Eyes For The World. Koen himself, has been blind in his left eye for 15 years and he said “After losing sight in my one eye, it has changed how I look at life”
Koen was greatly inspired by Prof. Joshua Silver, a British Physicist and Vision Scientist when working together in 2012. Prof. Silver had created an adjustable pair of glasses called the ‘Adspecs’. These adspecs are filled with dow corning optical fluid, so that the prescription of the specs can be determined by filling the membrane with silicone.
Two years later Koen met Prof John Friedman, an American anthropologist, and they started working on their own adjustable spectacles, and in 2016 they created the ‘Focusspecs’. With these innovations they were able to help people with myopia and hypermetropia, but handling astigmatism proved to be a challenge. Since, Koen has invented his own Eyesnap Technology; a new way of treating vision-related dysfunctions and helping children between the ages of 12 and 18 years old. Koen strongly believes that everyone should be able to enjoy a healthy and functional sight.
Since 2012, Eyes For the World has already distributed Adspec glasses, supporting many charities across the world including Myanmar, South-Africa, Peru, Brazil, Morocco, Madagascar, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Romania, Botswana, India, Benelux and Mongolia.
“This project is a worldwide project and what makes it possible is the fact that I don’t need expensive optometrist equipment to identify a problem” Koen said.
The Eyes For The World team plan to continue to distribute as many glasses as possible all over the world with the help of ophthalmologists and School Based Projects.
In 2025, Eyes For The World will start working with local lens cutting workshops in Congo and Cameroon, helping to train locals on how to recondition “old” spectacle frames and develop new ones with customized lenses.
To help support these projects, Eyes For The world greatly need the help and support from donors of unwanted eyewear so these old frames can be upcycled and reused to help people worldwide to see better.
Mikkel Swane, Global VP Marketing for Seaco said “As an organisation, Seaco sees it as our corporate social responsibility to give something back to worthwhile causes worldwide. Last year, Seaco representatives from around the world donated 153 unwanted glasses for this charity. This year, we are delighted to support Eyes For the World again, but we are also privileged to have the extra support from Intermodal Events to help raise further international awareness about Eyes For The World, and all the amazing projects fulfilled by Koen and his team.”
Fan Landers, Event Director of Intermodal Events commented “I’m proud to express how excited our entire team is to support Eyes For The World and their impactful mission to improve vision worldwide. We’re pleased to offer Intermodal Europe as a platform for this initiative, with collection bins available for your unwanted eyewear. Every donation will help advance a cause that truly makes a difference. We look forward to welcoming the container community to Rotterdam this November and joining forces for this meaningful effort.”
